Step 1: Concrete 100-Flat
Stack 10 ten-rods on top of each other. Notice they form a 10-by-10 square. That is 1 hundred β a new bundle, just like 10 ones became 1 ten.
Step 2: Pictorial Build
Using Base-10 blocks, build the number 345: 3 hundred-flats, 4 ten-rods, 5 cubes. How does each block show its place?
Step 3: Abstract Expanded Form
Write 345 = 300 + 40 + 5. Why does the 3 in 345 mean 300, but the 3 in 53 means only 3? What about the 0 in 706 β is it doing any work, or could we just write 76?
